Come walk the historic streets of Salem, meaning "peace" located in southern New Jersey, minutes from Philadelphia and Wilimington Delaware–established as a town and colony in 1675 by Quaker John Fenwick. Shortly after, 1682, the Port of Salem is designated by the British Crown and water trade begins. In 1735 the Old Salem County Courthouse is built and is the oldest active in NJ and second-oldest courthouse in the U.S. today.

THE FACTS

The Municipal Revitalization Index (MRI) serves as the State's official measure and ranking of municipal distress. Today Salem ranks No. 2 of 564 municipalities in New Jersey, just behind Camden ranking No. 1 for most distressed in the state.

NJ Department of Community Affairs defines distress as “a multidimensional municipal condition linked to fiscal, economic, housing, and labor market weakness in conjunction with a resident population that is generally impoverished and in need of social assistance.”
